What is it??

I found this wonderful piece a few years ago at an antique shop and still have not been able to find out exactly what it is. At first it looks like a crystal ball but the bottom of the glass ball is open and there is a slit at the top. My guess is some kind of a lamp with the slit for the hot air to escape, let me know what you think it could be!! Whatever it is, i just love it!

  3. How about an early de-humidifier? Or a Bunsen burner...and the wick would come through that slit at top...hmmm.....i still like a gypsy's crystal ball....

  5. Cheryl, I am not sure what this is but I would put a quarter in the slot and make a wish!:) It looks like something mystical to me. It is pretty amazing. I bet the glass is even prettier in person. I keep seeing little snippets of your house and wow, i'm envious. Love your creative touches. hugs, Amy

  7. It is a pretty amazing looking piece. At first glance it looked like a gazing ball. But the open bottom and top slot threw me off!
